Circular materials

Making things with respect for nature

Nature is AVORA's most fundamental value. We are designing production from the start to recover scrap, grow recycled content and move toward clean energy.

Our principles

Four principles we practise today.

  • The whole flow, one plan

Raw material, scrap, failed prints, packaging, energy and end of life, all in the same production plan.

  • Every term, its own meaning

Bio-based, recycled content, recyclable, compostable: different meanings, different labels.

  • We publish what we measure

Every indicator comes with its period, scope and method.

  • Full transparency in Loop

Every recycled-content product carries its share, source, lot and verification method.

Next steps

Work that starts with production.

  • Scrap goes back to the line

    Planned

Keeping production scrap apart by polymer and colour, and feeding it back into the line.

  • First recovery trials

    Planned

With traceable production scrap and separated single-material streams. PLA and PETG kept apart.

  • A recycled-content product

    Planned

AVORA Loop, from trials that pass quality verification.

  • Renewable energy

    Planned

We are evaluating on-site solar and renewable energy supply for the Samsun facility.

The material lifecycle

Recovery is not one step: collection, sorting, cleaning, reprocessing, quality verification. Each with its own decision and measurement.

  1. 01

    Raw material

The polymer's source, grade and supplier documentation. The loop starts here, and closes here.

  2. 02

    Production

Set-up, colour changes and off-diameter sections create scrap. Its origin and content are known, so it is the first candidate for recovery.

    Production scrap

  3. 03

    Printing

Failed prints, supports, test pieces. Considered when kept apart as a single material.

    Failed prints, kept separate

  4. 04

    Use

The right material and a durable part are the first saving, long before recovery.

  5. 05

    End of life

Mixed, painted, glued or unknown-origin parts. Outside the first trials.

    Mixed or unknown-origin waste

  6. 06

    Separate collection

Collected without mixing types. A mixed stream is often impossible to separate again.

  7. 07

    Sorting

By polymer, colour and additive. PLA and PETG never share a stream.

  8. 08

    Cleaning

Labels, adhesive, dust and foreign matter removed.

  9. 09

    Reprocessing

Grinding, drying, re-extrusion. Each heat cycle can change the polymer; nothing is used before it is measured.

  10. 10

    Quality verification

Diameter, moisture and print behaviour tested. Material that fails does not go back into product.

    Fails, doesn't return

  11. 11

    Back to material

Verified material becomes input again, with its share and source disclosed. The loop closes here.

The terms, precisely

They sit side by side on packaging; each answers a different question.

Bio-based≠Biodegradable

One describes where the material comes from; the other, what might happen at the end.

Recycled content≠Recyclable

One describes what is inside the product; the other, where it can go afterwards.

Bio-based
What it tells youThat the raw material comes wholly or partly from biological sources.
What it doesn'tThat it is biodegradable or compostable.
Renewable source
What it tells youThat the raw material comes from a source that can grow back.
What it doesn'tThat it lasts forever, or that making it has no impact.
Recycled content
What it tells youThat a defined part of the product is made from recovered input.
What it doesn'tThat it can be recycled again at end of life.
Recyclable
What it tells youThat it can be processed in a suitable system at end of life.
What it doesn'tThat such a system exists everywhere.
Biodegradable
What it tells youThat microorganisms can break it down under specific conditions and time frames.
What it doesn'tThat it can be left in nature or will dissolve in the sea.
Compostable
What it tells youThat it composts to a given standard in a suitable facility and conditions.
What it doesn'tThat it will compost at home, in a garden, or in any facility.

What a label doesn't say on its own

  • A resin's certificate does not cover every pigmented or filled product made from it.
  • Hemp or wood fill doesn't by itself make a product stronger or lower in impact.
  • Carbon fibre does not mean a low carbon footprint.

How we will measure

Every indicator with its period, scope and method.

  1. Period, scope, method

Every value states the period, the production and the calculation it covers.

  2. Measured data only

Industry averages or estimates are never presented as our data.

  3. Method changes are stated

We state the difference between old and new values openly.

Packaging and spools

Less packaging, reusable spools. The options we are evaluating.

Refill

Spool-less winding for your own spool.

Open question

Does the winding hold together in transit?

Reusable spool

A spool designed to be refilled many times.

Open question

How many uses does it survive?

Less packaging

Unnecessary layers go; what keeps moisture out stays.

Open question

Is the moisture barrier still enough?

Paper and cardboard

Paper or cardboard instead of plastic where it makes sense.

Open question

Does it work on a printer without dust or moisture issues?

We'll choose based on measured impact.

Let's move forward together.
